North Island vs South Island: where are groceries cheaper?
We compared prices on 5,000+ products across both islands. The answer might surprise you – it's not as simple as one island being cheaper.
One of the most common questions we get at Kete: which island has cheaper groceries?
We analysed our price data across 5,000+ products at Woolworths, New World and PAK'nSAVE, comparing the same products on the North Island and South Island. Here's what we found.
The short answer
It depends on the chain – and the product.
New World and PAK'nSAVE price per island: every store on the North Island charges the same price for a given product, and every store on the South Island charges a different (but island-uniform) price. Woolworths is different – prices are set per delivery suburb, not per island. Kete pins to each island's default delivery suburb (Auckland City CBD for the north, Christchurch CBD North for the south) to get comparable prices.
The breakdown by chain
Woolworths
Woolworths prices showed the most variation between islands. Roughly 60–70% of products had different prices depending on which island you're on. Some products were cheaper on the North Island; others were cheaper on the South. There's no consistent "one island is cheaper" pattern.
New World
New World had a similar split, with about 50–60% of products differing between islands. The differences tended to be smaller in absolute terms than Woolworths – often 10–30 cents per item.
PAK'nSAVE
PAK'nSAVE was the most uniform, but still had 45–55% of products priced differently between islands. PAK'nSAVE's lower-margin model means the absolute differences are typically smaller.
Why the difference?
Supermarket pricing in NZ is driven by:
- Distribution costs – transport to the South Island adds cost, but economies of scale and competition can offset this
- Local competition – in areas with less competition, prices may be higher regardless of island
- Regional demand – seasonal and regional preferences affect pricing strategies
There's no single rule. The idea that "the South Island is cheaper" (or vice versa) is a simplification that doesn't hold up across thousands of products.
